From 6-8pm on Friday 27th January, Waterstone’s Liverpool One will host a PS Publishing Showcase, featuring readings by Ramsey Campbell, Peter Crowther (from his science fiction/horror novel Darkness Falling), and Paul Kane (details beneath this message), followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

To book FREE tickets to this event, please click on the poster to your left for full information or visit the Twisted Tales website. There’s no commitment required, the organisers simply need to know how many people are coming so that they can make sure that there is adequate seating.

Praise for Twisted Tales Events

‘Twisted Tales events are wonderful… a great way of promoting 21st Century horror fiction. Supported by Waterstone’s Liverpool One and really well organised, Twisted Tales brings together established names in the genre as well as new voices and of course readers. Looking forward to much more to come…’ – Alison J. Littlewood

‘Hurrah once again for Waterstones! This time it’s the Liverpool One branch that’s supporting horror fiction, both with a fine section of the shop devoted to the field and by hosting a series of readings by its authors. Readings can bring tales to a new kind of life, and their authors too. More power to the bookshop and its knowledgeable specialists.’ – Ramsey Campbell

Ramsey Campbell: The Oxford Companion to English Literature describes Ramsey Campbell as “Britain’s most respected living horror writer”. He has been given more awards than any other writer in the field, including the Grand Master Award of the World Horror Convention, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Horror Writers Association and the Living Legend Award of the International Horror Guild. Among his novels are The Face That Must Die, Incarnate, Midnight Sun, The Count of Eleven, Silent Children, The Darkest Part of the Woods, The Overnight, Secret Story, The Grin of the Dark, Thieving Fear, Creatures of the Pool, The Seven Days of Cain and Ghosts Know. Forthcoming is The Kind Folk. His collections include Waking Nightmares, Alone with the Horrors, Ghosts and Grisly Things, Told by the Dead and Just Behind You, and his non-fiction is collected as Ramsey Campbell, Probably. His novels The Nameless and Pact of the Fathers have been filmed in Spain. His regular columns appear in Prism, All Hallows, Dead Reckonings and Video Watchdog. He is the President of the British Fantasy Society and of the Society of Fantastic Films.

Peter Crowther: Already the recipient of various awards for his writing and editing, Peter Crowther cemented his long-term place in the field with the introduction in 1998 of PS Publishing, now one of the most highly respected publishers in the field of horror, fantasy and science fiction. Starting in 1999 with just four novellas PS is now putting out between 30 and 40 titles annually. PS went on to receive the British Fantasy Society’s annual award for Best Speciality Press seven years running until Pete withdrew the imprint from further consideration. Aside from PS, Pete’s work has been widely translated, and his short stories have been adapted for TV on both sides of the Atlantic and collected in The Longest Single Note, Lonesome Roads, Songs of Leaving, Cold Comforts, The Spaces Between the Lines, The Land at the End of the Working Day and the upcoming Jewels In The Dust. He is the co-author (with James Lovegrove) of Escardy Gap and The Hand That Feeds, and author of the Forever Twilight SF/horror cycle and By Wizard Oak.

Paul Kane: An award-winning writer and editor. His short story collections are Alone (In the Dark), Touching the Flame, FunnyBones, Peripheral Visions, Shadow Writer, The Adventures of Dalton Quayle, and The Butterfly Man and Other Stories. His novellas include Signs of Life, The Lazarus Condition and RED. He is the author of the novels Of Darkness and Light, The Gemini Factor and the bestselling Arrowhead trilogy. He is co-editor of the anthology Hellbound Hearts and his non-fiction books are The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy and Voices in the Dark. His work has been optioned for film and television, and his zombie story ‘Dead Time’ was turned into an episode of the Lionsgate/NBC TV series Fear Itself, adapted by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW II-IV). He also scripted The Opportunity, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and The Weeping Woman – filmed by award-winning director Mark Steensland and starring Tony-nominated actor Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night).

Bill Oberst Jr Official Website Launch

BillOberst com

Official Press Release

“(Hollywood, CA): Bill Oberst Jr. is passionate about horror and it shows in the actor’s new Official Website.

The all-new BillOberst.com comes complete with horror merchandise (including a bloody Severed Ear and some exclusive T-shirt designs by horror genre artists) and a sense of fun that Oberst thinks is often lacking in modern-day horror.

This LA actor is known for roles in a slew of indie horror flicks as well as appearances on MTV’s “Death Valley,” HBO’s “True Blood” and the occasional high-profile dramatic lead in TV-movies like The Hallmark Channel’s “The Shunning” and The History Channel’s “Sherman’s March.” Oberst says he wanted a site that celebrated the kind of horror he loved as a kid. “Horror should be fun. And cathartic. And scary. And disturbing.” says Oberst “I wanted a site that was all of those things.” To create it, he turned to horror site specialists Rough Ride Creations. Rough Ride CEO Briana Malmstrom was so pleased with the results that she wrote an online case study about the site’s development process.

At the heart of the new BillOberst.com is a section called The Anatomy Of Fear, which celebrates the genre of body horror that Oberst has become associated with. “Bill fits squarely into the long cinematic tradition of the human body as an object of fear,” Malmstrom says, “so we created The Anatomy Of Fear, a mini-site with imagery and pop-up text on how Bill draws inspiration from the horror greats to use his face and body in disturbing ways on screen. The visitor travels through a weird old house environment and sees all of this as pictures hanging on the fading wallpaper surrounded by freakish objects. At the end of the journey there’s a creepy TV set playing a clip video from Bill’s horror work which we created especially for the mini-site.”

The actor says he hopes BillOberst.com is “the kind of site that Karloff or Lugosi or Vincent Price might have had if they had lived in our era, something creepy and fun. Horror continues to be good to me, and I hope horror hounds like me will drop in and let me know what they think,” he says. “Oh and be sure to roll your mouse over my face in the header. That’s my favorite part!

What do I think?

Rough Ride Creations have done an amazing job with Bill’s official website and I love how interactive it is.  You can easily find your way around and it’s just great fun.  The Anatomy of Fear is brilliant and the imagery is perfect!

As you more than likely know, I love Bill’s horror acting and I firmly believe that he will become the next horror icon.  I’ve even named a skull rosary after him and you can see more about that by clicking the image and watching the interview with More Horror below.

Assassins Review

The single sound of a tap switched off alerts the pathetic weasel of a would be assassin that his intended victim is home, but you question who will become the victim.

He points the gun at the back of his head and pulls the trigger back, but the victim doesn’t flinch. The victim knows the assassin very well and uses his knowledge to get inside the assassins head and ultimately talks ‘the’ would be assassin into turning the gun on himself.

I’m the pimp who helped you pop your cherry!

The words uttered by the cool and calm would be victim enrages the assassin, but the victim calmly gets up and tells him that he will be back, and back he comes with his gun and shoots the assassin in the leg.

The onslaught of psychological torture ensues until the ultimate happens, but I’m not going to spoil that for you.

Bill Oberst Jr plays Nathan who throughout the short piece displays a very mature and chilling performance. His portrayal of a seasoned assassin is frightening simply because of how calm and collected he remains while the nervous Walter, played by Vincente Disanti is 100% unpredictable, well not to Nathan he isn’t.

Michael Bonomo’s Film, Assassins is a masterpiece due to the cinematography and the direction of the acting, and he did a grand job as Bill Oberst Jr’s acting is totally convincing. Assassins delivers!

Look out for Assassins when it hits the festival circuits, but for now, here’s a trailer.

"Take This Lollipop:" Interactive Horror Ap Tops 5 Million Hits

OH MY GOD!

Fancy being stalked on Facebook by a psycho madman who stalks you, your friends, family and nothing can stop him?

With Halloween just around the corner, Take This Lollipop is going to FREAK YOU OUT!

lollipop

(Oct 22) A week before Halloween, the Facebook horror application Take This Lollipop (the brainchild of director Jason Zada and starring actor Bill Oberst Jr.) has topped 5 million unique hits to become the most-watched interactive horror project in web history.

Take This Lollipop offers users who connect via their Facebook account the experience of entering the lair of a disturbing cyber-stalker (played by Oberst) who peruses their friends list, pictures and location in a frightening demonstration of internet privacy concerns. The interactive video has the look and feel of a big-budget horror film. Take This Lollipop, and Oberst’s performance in it, have been compared to the original SAW in fan comments online.

Director Jason Zada, who shot the project with Oberst at the abandoned Linda Vista Hospital in LA (a popular and reputedly haunted LA horror film location) said in interviews on Friday for that it was all in scary fun. "I’m a huge fan of horror and Halloween…I felt it was a great opportunity to focus on Halloween and mix it with the underlying fear of privacy that we have nowadays with Facebook and other social networking sites," Zada said. "I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile and the talent came together at just the right time…from the perfect collaboration with my developer, Jason Nickel, to the ideal actor."

As for Oberst, being the most visible horror actor on the web just before Halloween has led to both professional interest and personal satisfaction. "I’m getting e-mails from all over the world," he said "and the reviews are fun to read (one said I looked like ‘a malnourished Daniel Craig.’) My dad was happy to see me mentioned in Forbes and The New York Times….but most fun of all, kids have been posting great vids of themselves ‘taking the lollipop’ on YouTube. But I can’t take any credit for the performance. Jason Zada is a truly great director. If my performance creeps folks out the credit for that should go to Jason and his team. This was his vision. I’m just happy to have played a small part in it."

As of press time Take This Lollipop.com was approaching a million Facebook "likes" in addition to over 5 million unique URL hits. Oberst will next be seen as the leader of a desert cult in director Jourdan McClure‘s feature film CHILDREN OF SORROW and has just been attached as lead to horror screenwriter Cheryl Compton’s script EVIL’S TOY, in which a young woman obsessed with a Ouija Board unwittingly releases a demon via the world of social networking.
