I would be extremely tentative around her. The way she is hiding in the shadows and leaning to one side with her head bowed down suggests she is out to cause some trouble. I cannot tell if she is brandishing a weapon or hiding something and I am left wondering why she would just stand in the shadows like that. It's only natural to assume that anyone lurking in the shadows is trying to hide something and in this case it might a weapon that she will use to mug me with. I would most likely cross the street instead of walk past her because I don't think she is there to seek or give any help. I just get the foreboding feeling of mischief and trouble from her.

Trying to reevaluate the Zombie mythos, and think that it can be quite clearly split into two. The more common and definately more scary portrays zombification as a highly infectous disease, The threat of contagion is not as selective as Vampirism. it effects anyone and everyone at their death.
The other, portrays zombification as a selective curse, cast by ceremony. against people with vendetta, and black magic.
More "romantic", less scary.

Despite the higher threat of infection, I think that Vampires have got the Fear factor over Zombies. They are cunning and have the wisdom of age, Being a selected victim adds to fear, and they have good motor skills.

Synoiz, I think you have stated your opinion very well with your comment, 'I’m going with zombies as a situation, and vampires as a creature.'

Considering your view and reading DandyHouseBoy's discussion regarding werewolves, zombies would still be a more frightening situation, because you would at some point be defeated by a zombie.

Oddly I was just having this conversation with a friend the other day (except it was Zombies v Slasher (Michael Myers/Jason etc)).
The way I see it is that zombies in films are rarely scary because of what they can do (unlike the vampire who's mystery and "powers" tend to be the horror aspect), in films it's more about the social repercussions of them. A zombie wouldn't be frightening if it was at the end of a long corridor and you could just run away or shoot at it, the fear comes from either the number of them, the fear of hurting a now-deceased loved one, or more often is the case in films, the fact you have to survive with other people in the mix.
There's always the Cooper's out there who are only after their own ends or the military types (28 Days, Day of the Dead), the anarchists or representatively the outsiders (Dawn of the Dead) and other bastards who have their own agenda where the vast majority don't factor.
The simple fact is, zombies don't think and on their own aren't too frightening. It's the fact that the existance of zombies pretty much destroys everything about society and as it were, shuffles the deck. Vampires tend to be isolated, (Dracula, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Salem's Lot etc) and once the threat is dealt with despite how hard it's been and how many people have died, everyday folks are unaware and unaffected and those who were affected get back to some kind of life. Zombies suggest that everyone is affected regardless and the world is thrown into chaos.

So in conclusion, I'd say that while yes, a person might be far more frightened of a vampire, it might be possible to kill it or escape and live on. However if you saw a zombie, even if you didn't realise it then, it might well be the end of the world as we know it and the world would never be the same again.
I wonder which is more frightening now...

Vampires of course! The essence of darkness, the threat of death or immortal life thrown in with the potential for a nibble on the neck that could lead (depending on the rating of the book or film you are indulging in) petite morte ;)
