Graveyards and Cemeteries

Freezing Fog Cemetery Photographs

I just couldn’t resist popping into the cemetery on the way to work and take some photographs of the cemetery shrouded in freezing fog.  I didn’t last long as it was certainly cold and I’m amazed I didn’t fall due to the icy paths.

Further cemetery prints can be viewed within the gallery .

What Will Your Lasting Memory Be?

Is it true that the British are afraid to speak about their death and what they would like their graveside plot or funeral to say about them?

With this post, my question above should hopefully be answered and if you would like your say, please comment below.

IGraveside Memorial Photograph (C) Amanda Norman’ve sometimes thought about what I would like my grave to look like, but then I get pissed off at the way cemeteries are starting to look these days with boring headstones all the same height, standing upon row after row. How boring is this?

I was watching the BBC news this morning and they were talking about how a vicar was removing false flowers from graves as he didn’t like the look of them messing up the graveyard, which led to them discussing appropriate memorials and behaviours within graveyards and cemeteries.

I have noticed recently the odd wind chime in a cemetery and this has never bothered me at all. In fact, I found it to be a nice addition, but some find the noise distracting. I’m not sure if I would like wind chimes if every grave had one. There would certainly be no resting in peace.

I was disturbed to hear that some Americans have started introducing speaking headstones and how some find the idea of this shocking. WHOA! Can you imagine walking past headstones that had a movement sensor and a voice from the grave started telling you about their life? No!

When discussing this on Twitter, @damnedshrubs commented that there’s probably a video headstone somewhere and perhaps we could expect holograms in the future. Now this is such a scary thought don’t you think?

Cemeteries just wouldn’t be peaceful places if voices from the dead were to fill your ears as you strolled on by, but with current regulations i.e. no headstone over a certain height or the increasing cost of burials, how is one to leave a lasting memory that will be cherished?

I joked on Twitter that I would like my headstone to make a camera clicking noise as someone strolled by, but the idea of noisy headstones fills me with dread. It’s true, if one person does something, others would copy and things would get out of hand, hence the need for regulations.

If you walk amongst the old tombs and graves of the Victorians, there must be at least one grave that stands out to you. I’ve seen a photograph of a man’s best friend who is laid upon his headstone keeping watch over his dead master. Graves like this stand out, but what can we have today?

Should we be looking at leaving a lasting memory at the point prior to the funeral like this family did below?

I think that you will agree that her photograph captures the atmosphere of a cemetery and the composition draws you into the various headstones.

Thank you to all those who entered!

Southern Cemetery Manchester Photographs

I could spend hours in this beautiful cemetery taking photographs and I will have to visit again soon.  It is so well kept and there is so much to photograph.
